Default Uninstall folders - remove them?

Hello,

I have a Gateway Intel Pentium 4, 2.39 GHz running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002, Service Pack 2. It has 1GB memory and 38.2GB hard drive with 1.18GB remaining.

Within my WINNT folder there are 122 hidden files in folders that appear to be uninstall files for windows. An example would be $NtUninstallKB823980$. I believe that is what is hogging all the memory on my hard drive. Are these safe to remove?

In advance, thanks for any help rendered.

Diane

Yes they are ... but if you don't need the space I would leave 'em alone ... and, if you need to uninstall one of those 'hotfixes' you wont be able to.

Hi Ghostman,

What does av stand for. I am looking at processes in the window task manager, and the biggest hog appears to be AOL Desktop. Isn't that showing me RAM and not hard drive memory. I just checked again today and I am now down to 230 MB on my hard drive and I know I haven't used 38G.

I went ahead and deleted almost all of my Uninstall folders and it didn't free up any memory at all. Is there a delay when you delete folders you get your memory back later perhaps? The recycle bin is empty and I did several system cleanups, to no avail.

Thanks for your help.

Diane

AV= Anti virus ...There is no hard drive Memory.. What are you looking at ?
Are you right clicking on C: drive to see how much hard drive space is gone ?
Is you computer running slower ? There are allot of tweaks to optimize your computer..

What is this AOL desktop ?

"memory" is defined as RAM space. With hard drives its refered to simply "space", when you deleted the files it would have free'd up space on your hard drive NOT your RAM, you should see a change in the Free Space in your C: > Properties

Hi Dwarfer,

I am sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you on this. I have just returned to the house with the computer that has the problem. I meant to say space not memory. Sorry for the error. I am now down to under 200 MB of space and am receiving warnings from the compter of my serious space shortage. I have deleted all that I dare. When I did delete the Uninstall files it did not give me any extra space at all. Why didn't I get that space back? I always thought that when you delete files you would get that space back to add more files. It didn't happen that way for me with the Uninstall files.

Any help or suggestions from anyone would be greatly appreciate.

Thanks.

Diane

Whenever you remove programs from "Add /Remove Programs" from Control Panel space is certinally to be free'd up.

To check the progress of your space usage goto:
My Computer > Right Click xxxxxxx (C (where xxx is the name of your drive) and click Properties. This should now show you how much free space you have on your drive

To free up space goto:
Start > Control Panel > Add /Remove Programs > and uninstall all the rubbish you dont want.

Check your drive space again, there is a 100% chance it will have free'd up some space, depending on the size of the program...

If this didnt work then get back to us as your virtual memory might be the cause. nevertheless, 200mb of free space is cause for allarm on any XP hard drive.

TIP: DELETE YOUR RECYCLE BIN

Hello again,

I have already removed all programs I dare from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and I could see space being freed up there. Where I did not see any space recovery was when I went into my computer WINNT and deleted most of the Uninstall folders such as
$NtUninstallKB823980$. These files did not show up in Add/Remove Programs.

My computer, C drive, properties is where it is showing I have less than 200 MB hard drive space available. And as mentioned before, my recycle bin has been emptied.

I am truly at a loss and greatly fear a hard drive crash.

Thanks for all help that has been provided thus far and I hope to receive further suggestions.

Diane

My Computer

Do you have an Anti-Virus software, old norton programs used to put deleted recycle-bin items in a folder on the drive.

To check:
Right click Recycle Bin > Click "Perge Files" or something like that.

If you don't see it then goto My Computer, right click C:, Properties, Disk Cleanup, delete everything in there except "Recovery" if you see it
