Hey all, A friend of mine asked me to put a pc together for him, he said he didn't need it to be "hardcore" but good enough for him to do alot of graphic design work on it. What would be a decent card for this type of task. also if theres a specific hardware configuration that would be optimal for graphic designing , i'll take any suggestions. thanx a million.

What sort of budget are you on?
What spec is the rest of the system? If the Rig is pretty good, then for a decent card I'd get a 9600XT if it's just for graphics ie Photoshop. There are specialist cards - Ti4600 I think, but some one else can tell ya about them, namely because I have no clue. If you want it for some gaming, then the 9800PRO is a good bet, as great performance and great price. |

ATi's FireGL and nVidia's Quadro cards are the workstation target cards. If he's not gaming at all, something like a Radeon 9000 is fine, and even then you might want to look into Matrox G450 or G550 as the accuracy and clarity of the graphics card is key...especially if he's doing work with Photoshop, GIMP, Bryce or CAD...having a GeForce 6800 Ultra is really a waste of money by any stretch of the imagination. You do not need a powerful video card for these programs. CPU grunt and memory should be where you spend most of the money along with a fast hard drive.

awesome, i have heard that the quadro cads and the like are best for non gaming graphics work, i don't think my friend will be doing any heavy gaming (nothing that needs directx 9 for that matter) probably starcraft at MOST. i think he'd be interested in a 3 ghz processor (if pent 4) and about a gig or so of ram. budget is anywhere up to 1500, but hopefully not near that cap.
