I recently used windows update on Vista on my Toshiba U300-11V laptop, and it is stuck in a loop whenever I turn it on, going from "configuring updates 3 of 3: 0%", to "shutting down..." then when it restarts the process begins again.
Any ideas how to fix this or at least start Windows fully? I tried safe mode however this still attempts to configure updates before entering windows. |

You can find more information about it here.
The updater needs to perform maintanance, and in some cases it needs to reboot quite often. It's best to keep it running at night or the whole day until the process is finished. |

Left it for several hours and nothing changes. It is at 0% every time and doesn't progress at all before deciding to shut down again. I don't believe the problem you posted is the same one I am having.
Any more ideas? I would like even just to be able to temporarily bypass the configuration of updates process to get onto Windows if possible. |

Boot from the Vista installation Disc. Select your country and keyboard layout. Then, instead of Install, choose advanced/repair options in the lower left part of the screen. Select Windows Vista, then choose Diagnose. It should detect that a patch prevents the system from booting and needs to be restored. Follow all steps to repair it.
If for some reason it doesn't detect a problem, use system restore from the disc to restore to the part when the update was not installed yet. |

Microsoft f***ed it up
. The only way to get use of Vista back is to do a system restore I'm afraid. Here's an article about it.
