My Computer

Default War of the Worlds

Watched the DVD last night....

I like Speilberg and I like Cruise but I have to say that I was very disappointed.
The film starts and ends with quite the same feeling - so what.

So again, maybe I missed the point and maybe I have too much fond memories from the audio only version (the double LP read by Richard Burton).

Bottom line is - Don't bother....

When I saw it at the cinema I thought it was really good (and I now have it on DVD). But I've never bothered to listen to the audio version, so maybe that's why.

The audio version had such atmosphere to it and such carachter and I felt that the film had none of that....

Bah. It's a decent movie but not that great.

Just one part I thought was rather lame is how the premise is that the tripods have been sitting underground for like millions of years? I can't remember all the details very well, but that's right isn't it? Didn't they find out that the lightning striking the ground was really transporting the aliens into the robots which were already buried there from a long time ago? Yeah so that whole thing was stupid. It's better how in the book, if I remember correctly, I think the robots land on the earth in black spheres, as meteors, basically.

I'm not sure entirely how the origional went but I'm pretty sure the ending is accurate. I liked it quite a bit, it was really atmospheric and really made things look hopelessly desperate for awhile. The effects were great and the scene where the first tripod burst from the pavement was teriffic. Yeah the ending isn't that fun but I guess they had to stick to source material a little.

Off Topic:

lol. I just realized: aren't we giving away a lot of spoilers in this thread (or others like this one)? Maybe we should use white text and warn of spoilers next time we talk about a movie's ending haha.

I watched it before on Sky. I didnt get the point to any of it. Why did the tripods turn up in the first place? Other than killing people, what were they doing on Earth? Why did they die? One minute they were invincible the next they were getting done in by modern day bazookas!
The story line can be summed up as Aliens come, kill then die for no reason but because thats what aliens do.

Im not one for films like this anyway, in fact I hate sci-fi but there is no point to the film.

If you've not seen it yet dont take my word, I hate most films! Borat and Casino Royale lived up to my expectations though, even after the hype. Borat had far funnier bits in the 11 OClock show though.

Hang on. Tripods to Borat...sorry Im going on a bit now. I suppose they are both aliens!

They came to earth to take over, perhaps searching for a new place to live, and they lived off humans by the looks of it, or living things, as all those vainy red things all over contained blood.

They died coz of all the black crows or something, the enviroment on earth wasent suitable for them, i think bacteria may have killed them?, then the rocket launchers could fire at them because the shields were down.

I think with movies adapted from the origionals it's impossible to please everyone. If you make it too close to the origional then most younger people will find it too dull or old school and dry. But if you make it too modern then those that grew up and knew the origional will feel that it's abandoning it's source material and ruining the story and so on.

I've heard that there is a 10min scene where the mighty battle over the top of the hill took place but all we see is a a load of F16's and apachy helecopters fly over head and then the ground forces move forward and then there's a big wollop and that's it, it appeares that spielburg cut it as he did'nt deem it worth including......are you kidding
