My Computer

Default Watercooling Evaporation

I use the Big Water 745. For coolant i use a 50/50 mix of stock coolant and Koolance coolant. In my reservior i have noticed the level went down a little less than centimeter but enough so u could notice. Every time my pc is on u can faintly smell the coolant in the room so im wondering if its evaporating from the radiator as its passing through. And yes i leaked checked and its fine, especially since the rad. is above my power strips and the other connections are right near my hardware, so i definently would know if there was a leak. So what to do?

My Computer

In general, when a substance goes from a solid to a liquid it expands 1000x so i would imagine that it would be possible for the vaporised cooling liquid to escape even if the liquid coolant is not leaking, and since you can smell it something must be getting out.

2 things that i can think of off the top of my head that might help

- Keep the coolent as cold as possible, so that less of it evaporates.

- You can get a tape (looks a bit like electrical tape, but it doesn't stick to anything) that you wrap around screw threads on taps etc before you screw anything onto them to might the joint tighter, i have no idea what its called but my mum uses it in the garden (she hooked up a load of sprinklers etc to water everything) so i would guess you can get it from gardening places (or failing that, I'm guessing plumbers would use it so try anywhere that sells pipe etc).

Good luck

Off Topic:

No i haven't tested this and i don't have any evidence, it just makes sense to me [which doesn't mean anything, i have strange logic sometimes].

P.S I've never even seen water cooling on PC's in real life

alright cool, yeah i imagine that the heat thing is a big issue because when the coolant goes into the radiator it is about 34-36C so... I will look into the tape as it does make sense.

so i would just put the tape where the tubes meet the radiator and what not?

Also, tubing can let water out. Depending on the particular material, the tubing may be a little porous. Nothing of "Oh crap!" type porous, but the nature of the material. I've heard of epoxy coated tubing, but I don't know the cost or where to get some.

However, the previous advice to look at the connections and make sure they're well sealed is definitely something to do. Right now, it's summer, and that's going to keep water warmer than when it's winter, obviously.

The tape being referred to is plumbers tape. I don't know if electrical tape would do or not, but plumbers tape is made specifically for applications to seal water. Alternatively, use of silicone grease on the barbs will make it easier to slide the tubes on while providing a more water tight seal. Of course, some small clamps from your hardware store might be in order to make sure things don't slide off too easily.

Alright then. my dad has some plumbers tape, i can just tape around the connections right? or do i have to re-connect everything. As for the tubing ur probaly right is very thin and is probaly letting the coolant get out. I have thicker tubing that wont let it out but it's not my idea of fun to change all the tubing so maybe when i drain the system ill do that. But i definetly will try plumbers tape

You will have to re-connect everything, as the plumbers tape goes inside the joint. If your unsure you should ask you dad (i guess he knows how to use it as he has some )
