With closed-source software, there's no way to fix the bugs yourself, and any version of Windows Media Player < v6 are notoriously buggy and bloated. I'd try a substitute program, such as Winamp. My favorite media player of all time is amaroK by far, but unfortuantely I believe it is Linux-only. You can howerver try it out with this Live CD, if such a thing interests you. Just burn the ISO, boot your system to it and enjoy (no installation or Linux experience necessary). The CD's pretty cool, even comes with free music from Magnatune.com!
