A service pack is a collection of updates and new features for an OS.

Service pack 2 included:

- popup blocker for IE
- Windows Security Center
- DEP (data execution prevention)
- Different bootscreen (only Windows XP is shown, but not the edition)

SP2 was a big modification for XP.

Service Pack 3 will only include a large group of updates, and some security measures taken from Vista.

It's a release candidate. That means that it's the last testing round. In an RC, most bugs have been fixed but it's not ready for official release yet.
