    Default Your opinion?

I'm soon to be embarking on getting an IT Certification (well, a few to be exact), I'll be studying to get the CompTIA A+, MCP, MCDST, MCSA and MCSE certifications. Anyone know what I can expect from the course or have any tips for me?

well.... lots of studying, as you already know i expect, that most of these cousres have more than one test and they are very expensive, so study study study. another thing to expect, is a job! with these certs. you can get quite a large range of jobs in the it industry.

All the certification you are going to take are need real hard work. And also it include both hardware as well as software(application) professionals. You have to decide, according to your future plans, which exam should get first. Even I want to take three exams, SCJP, A+ and MCAD. First SCJP, to develop my carrier life.

First you have to remeber that the actual certificates are worthless w/o knowing what you are doing. You do need the certs though, they get you the face to face interview. IMO a lot of or at least the MCSE course I took was way to fast to learn anything and I do not think they covered anything like ipconfig or any of the real day to day stuff. Since I started with PC's in the late 80's it has been a never ending learning experience. I try to learn stuff at home on my own and use my own network, then take the exams. I still do a lot of reading. I think PC / network is a really good choice for a career. I think you will do excellent, it just takes some work.

I think with a list like that you're going to need a lot of will power and grit to keep going so prepare yourself for the hard days when studying just drives you mad. Ironically I'm going to say don't rush as well. I think we all start off with a timetable of how quickly we can do a cert and I think most of our expectations are a little optimistic. It'll take as long as it takes. Study each day and see where you are at the end of the first month. And finally, KNOW YOUR STUFF. Dont do half assed studying just to fit an exam in before a certain date.

I got a good "push" from a low paying entry level job doing all the grunt work at a pc repair center. The older more experienced techs would do stuff like hack my shop pc from their bench a few tables back, have uncontrollable porn pop up , or a blue screen and i would have to reinstall. I learned the basics and more, studying on my own a lot after that. When you first start out you will have a lot of discouraging events happen, that is part of learning. It is great work, indoors, good ppl, usually you are left alone, good pay , working with your brain instead of your back.
