My latest gaming rig - Intel Q6600 - G.E.I.L. 4 GB DDR2-800 - Geforce 8800GTX - Corsair CMPSU-620HX 620 watts PSU - Antec Performance One P182 case - MSI P6N SLI Platinum mobo - TP-LINK TL-WN550G WLAN PCI card - Samsung SpinPoint 500GB SATA - LG DVD+RW drive - Samsung 22" monitor - Windoze Vista home premium 64-bit Total costs: €2000 Any comments about this build? edit: Is my 620W PSU enough for the geforce 8800GTX and Q6600?
620W should be fine as long as the 12v rail is decent (combine 25+.) The only issue that you could have with that is if you tried to SLI that 8800 GTX... That's alot of power consumption and alot of heat. Another thing is that if you do plan on SLI'ing on that mobo, you won't get two full x16 graphic rails. The 650i chipset supports I think x16 + x4 in SLI mode if I remember correctly. I would recommend on a different mobo with a 680i chipset for a real monster rigg.
That's a decent board. I think the sound card that comes with that isn't a PCI-e x1, but has its own interface. That's the only downside to that board I can think of offhand. You can't upgrade that soundcard and use the same slot, making that slot pretty much worthless. But they could have made a revision I didn't see and changed it to a PCI-e. Just check with Asus to make sure that the memory you are planning on will work with it, because the 680i is touchy with memory and timings.
well, I'm using GEIL memory. It should be working (all brands on their qualified vendors list aren't available here, unfortunately).
Okay, I've built the system. Instead of G.E.I.L RAM I used Kingston HyperX DDR2-800 4 GB. Installing went fine, except the installation of the graphics card (Geforce 8800GTx), because it has the exact size from the rear to the Harddisk drive bracket. Had to remove the plastic clips at the back of the case first, before I could insert the card. The installation of Vista (Home Premium X64) failed, resulting in a BSOD. Fixed that issue with a BIOS upgrade. So now I'm running Vista Home Premium X64 on my new PC, and the performance is very high.
Awesome grats man. You should run some synthetics and let us know what you get. Too bad you didnt get the 8800GT and save yourself about $200USD. Other than that you've got yourself a pretty sick build. Have u got that Q6600 overclocked at all?
Sure, I'll do that later this week. The 8800GT is not available here yet unfortunately. Not yet. I first want to see if everything is stable right now. The CPU temperature is 30 degrees C on idle, and 45 C on full load. So I'll do the overclocking somewhere later, but not right now.
Ya, with those Quads you have to be really really careful. They consume power in a non-linear matter. It's not a horrible exponent, but it is a little excessive in my opinion. And of course, more power consumed = more heat = less stability.
Have you overclocked that? Q6600 and to how high? because i want to get that processor but the 95W edition.
