Hey there. I have a Compaq Presario SR5065AN Desktop PC, running Vista Home Premium.

    I have...

'TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H653L SCSI CdRom Device'
    'SCSI DVD-ROM SCSI CdRom Device'

...listed in my device manager. My problem is when I insert a blank disc of variable brand (some cheap and nasty, some very good quality), I get the error message:

However, I can read these discs as long as they already have data on them, and I can bun data to the discs using third party software, and then it is able to be read in Windows Explorer no probs. But Vista itself will not recognize a blank disc when inserted, and will not offer me any autoplay options.

Here's what I've done. I've attempted to update the firmware for the 'TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H653L SCSI CdRom Device'. Although it shows the update was successful, the little detection programme I use to see what version it is still shows the old version. But even so, on the firmware update webpage, the bugs the update was meant to fix didn't include the proplem I'm having, so I don't know how important that update is to my particular problem.

I've also uninstalled the current driver, and reinstalled it again. No change.

I've also told it it'd better behave or I'll XP it, or even worse, Linux it! But even that didn't put the fear of God into it!

So even though I can burn data to both CD's and DVD's using 3rd party software, I cannot use Windows Explorer to drag pictures from a folder to the disc. Nor 'explore' the blank disc. This is only a small inconvenience, but if it says it can do it, it should darn well do it.

All help gratefully received, just please keep it pretty simple as far as technical detail goes....thanks guy.

    Happy Christmas.

    Me :)

So you cant burn photos / folders to the disk using Windows built in tools. Is that the problem?

    Hey'a Tech,

Yup. Can't burn anything using the Windows tools. Windows does not recognize there is even a disc inserted. So obviously it doesn't give me any autoplay options either. This problem only concerns blank discs, (cd's or DVD's), and is only an issue with windows tools.

    Thanks :)

Unfortunately Vista has had some history with optical drive problems which were"solved" yet still occur. Unfortunately they are quite varied.

Seeing as your 3rd party apps do the job it doesn't seem to be a driver problem but an internal Vista problem so check this out. Maybe it will help although I suggest you backup your registry beforehand.
