I have an e8200 and with stock cooler and base stats it is around 50C at idle and around 60C at full load. However when I overclock it to above 3ghz it just freezes randomly, but even overclocking just to 3ghz gives it idle temps of around 60C and when on full load(prime) it climbs up and I stop it when reaches 80C and is still climbing. Is this just my processor, or the stock cooler needs changing? (There are people with the stock wo have managed overclocking the 3ghz at max of around 70C though) P5n-D motherboard 4gb Corsair xm3 800mhz (5-5-5-18) 9600gt hiper 580W type-m
Yes you are right people have over clocked that chip to 3GHz on stock cooler and have had no problems so my guess is that you either may have not installed the stock cooler correctly or their isn't enough thermo paste or embarrassingly you forgot to take out the plastic cover which covers the copper base and thermo paste when it is packaged to stop scratches, this has happened to a friend of mine. So i guess you should check that the stock cooler is sitting nicely on the chip and everything else checks out. I'm pretty sure your stock cooler is not in good contact with the chip which is why it's over heating. btw the copper base might also be defective, check that it is nice and flush with a mirror finish to it.
Yep people who made pc(Dino PC) had just put a splodge of compound in the middle of cpu. Bough an akasa blue cpu cooler, now overclocking to 3.2ghz happily at 39C and 30C ( 1.248V).
