My friend just bought a brand new PC a few days ago and it came in today. We installed it PERFECTLY.
    Specs:
    P6T Asus Motherboard
    12gb (2gbx6) mushkin triple channel 1600 ram
    Core i7 920
    Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 120mm SSO CPU Cooler
    BFG GTX 295 GPU
case has 8 fans, super cool!
    850w power supply.

He didn't buy a new Hard Drive since it was fairly new already so he used it for the new build. So, we booted up and after waiting 5 minutes for the GUI boot (Vista logo) to complete, it searched for a bunch of drivers and installed them all within an hour... very slowly i might add.
After the install, we restarted and discovered a 5 minute hang during the GUI boot again and happens every time after. In addition, the computer is super slow during idle processes.
Could it be that i need to format? Maybe there are complications with old and new motherboard drivers? This is a long shot but could it be that he needs to add more thermal paste? Are there settings i should change in the CMOS?

    Thanks

Has the bios deteced all your components correctly? correct cpu frequency, ram frequency etc? as for your hard drive, should format when it comes to new build. The other drivers can cause complications/errors.

I should have mentioned this earlier but the BIOS detects everything BUT the CPU fan speed. I get an error:
"CPU Fan Error! Press F1 to resume"

I press F1 and it boots up.
And i strongly believe that my friend, as i suggested, should format his drive. He doesn't want to go through the hassle though but it' something he just might have to do.

Is that a new fan your using on the cpu? has your mate removed the old motherboard chipset drivers from the hard drive.

Yes, its a new Heat Sink with 2 fans on the sides. We applied a very thin amount of thermal paste, mounted the Heat Sink, and plugged in the fans in the right slots.
And no, he didn't remove the old drivers before he installed he new ones.

well if he aint removed the old drivers before installing the new one he needs to asap. this will cause errors and complications on a big scale. for your cpu fan, download speedfan and see if it reads your cpu fan speed.

btw: your thermal paste is right all you need is a small amount

oh yea, you said you have two fans on your heatsink, one goes into cpu fan header and the other into another fan header, try swopping them over. place the current cpu fan on the other header and the other fan onto the cpu header. see if that fix's your "fan error"

ok, we tested the ram, and it seems to only hang on GUI & lag, with 10gb & 12gb. 4,6 & 8gb of ram loads fast and working as it should, but it won't with 10 or 12gb, all slots & ram are working fine...

You mean you just stuck in the hard drive without formatting it first ? That will never work..you are trying to use all the old info from the old pc on the new build. none of the drivers will match.. You need to Delete the partition and reformat and start fresh..
Also if there is still some problems, try removing some ram..

yea he just put the hard drive in, no format and kept the old motherboard drivers on and installed the new one's ontop of that.
so he's got two sets of chipset controller drivers installed.

should of just gone for a full format dude.

have you tried running memtest with all 6 slots filled?

what are your ram timings? could need tightning, possible reason for lag? would of thought if the ram timings are loose, it would cause lag
    (crap response time)
