My cousin took apart his computer and ruined it, but i managed to salvage a dvd drive and a wire that connects to the sound card. I tried sticking this in my dell dimension 4200 and it read the drive after hooking it to the drive wires and giving it power. when i put a dvd in, the computer seems to be reading something but then it just always says insert a correct cd into the e:/ drive, is it possible to use this drive?
that depends, if the drive is IDE then yes, just alter the jumper setting on the drive, (assuming you only have 1 HDD, set as Master on the primary IDE channel or as either master or slave on the secondary IDE channel, it your system sees the drive at POST then it will probably work (presumably your using XP SP2) EDIT: since WinMe was released you no longer need to connect a CD / DVD drive to your sound card
