Can anyone recommend some alternative means of performing backups for my Linux system? Currently, I'm using a disk-imaging program via Windows, which works fine and I have done a couple of 'trial' Linux restores to test if they work - they both worked flawlessly and restored my Linux system as it was! Is there a disk-imaging program I could use in Linux (I have only seen a server version so far)? Thought about using Mandriva's backup and restore facility, but would not know how to go about doing a restore, say in the event that Mandriva would not boot, and have found precious little on the Net about how this is carried out - guess that's why disk-imaging is my tried and trusted method at the moment. However, it would be good to get away from the 'dependency' of having to use Windows to do my Linux backups! Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
A quick search of the ubuntu repositories revealed Partimage It is the only one I can find in ubuntu - don't know whether Mandriva has it
Yes it should be available for mandriva. Just do urpmi partimage, or if you can't find it there then this should help: RPM resource partimage
Thanks, guys. Just downloaded Partimage from RPM resource partimage It has installed - I checked it in my 'Installed Software' via the package manager. However, I can't find the program via my desktop at all. All the other programs that I have installed have been via the package manager and are readily accessable from the KDE desktop. Might Partimage be something that I have to run via the command line? Edit: Just found 'Partimage' under 'Configuration - Hardware'?? Still no joy though - the program will not run 'egg timer' goes on for a while then, zilch! Not my day, obviosly!
Cheers, Mega. Tried it and just got asked for my password, entered it, then got 'broken pipe'. I'll press on, but the install went okay and the package manager said the install was 'done'. Weird, eh?
