hiya guys, is there any way to have the install media remember what packages need to be installed by default (to make installing a new OS less hassle) e.g. on kubuntu you only need to run adept once, because install media remembers which packages i want installing, cos it's a pain with adept, it takes me about 6 hours to go through the software list in adept thankies guys
i'll try to clarify erm...erm...erm...i want to save the packages i have installed (preferably save it to the instalation media) so, i don't have go through adept everytime i install kubuntu i think that should clarify it, if not, just let me know, thanks mega TY
Are you talking about reusing the installed package list to reinstall everything you had installed before with a simple command after reinstalling the OS? I know that this can be done in debian based distros but I can't find the info you need. This can be done with freeBSD very easily as well but that won't help you any. The basic process is dumping the output of the package list stat into a text file and then dumping that text file into the package manager to reinstall all packages you had before. Sorry I can't be of more assistance.
yeah, cos it's a pain going through adept each time i reinstall, my current install is about knack'd, it works fine but there are more than a few problems, and it would be easier to reinstall than to fix all the problems, besides that, i don't know how to fix them but i do know how to reinstall it, will stick with 1 install when i know kubuntu better NP, thankies anyway Edit: although i only wanted to have the packages that were installed on my old install, being able to install them all with one command would be even better, cos i can't write, so making a big list of packages to install would be a bit impractical Edit: is there anyway i can burn all the software i want installed on a blank DVD and install all software with one command
What programs would you need to reinstall? Automatix can install most programs automatically. If you do ditch Kubuntu, maybe you should check out Debs or openSUSE
I found some stuff that may be of use. See here and here. It requires dpkg and I don't know if that is installed by default on ubuntu. There are tools out there that do what you want and are usually there to help clone systems.
no, i think you misunderstand, i don't want to reinstall anything, i would like to have the same software / packages installed in a new install of kubuntu, that were installed in my old install kubuntu, to save me having to install everything through adept do you thing it's time i moved away from kubuntu, cos i quite like it, guys Edit: just read kenji's posted info, does anyone else recommend i try debian
Well if you like Kubuntu then continue using it As you know, Kubuntu is my favourite OS too I like to try out other distributions as well though on my second computer. I like to get a broader taste of desktop Linux and experience the differences between the *nixs
well i did like it, but after today, i'm thinking of going back to mandy (not really, i refuse to let an OS beat me) wish i could afford a second PC
Have you checked your local FreeCycle group? You need to register with the Yahoo group before you can browse the ads. Computers are given away free all the time here in London.
thankies mega, this adept is playing up again, if i didnt know better i'd say it was a virus or spyware, cos i'm prevented from installing stuff like ClamAV or anything else, is there a way to check for viruses & spyware from konsole ?
