I've got a Packard Bell easynote laptop and it came with an integrated wireless card. I'd like to use wireless so i can take the laptop anywhere in the house but im not sure about all the hardware that i need. As the NIC is integrated is all that i need now a wireless modem?? Is there any there other hardware i need? Could someone post some links to compatable wireless modems please. Also, will a wireless setup make use of the 1mb connection i have or will the speed of the connection become slower? Thanks guys, hopefully someone out there can help this wireless n00b.
To share internet connection, you need a wireless router. You connect your existing modem (if its ADSL you need an ADSL wireless router) to the router and then your router will provide the wireless infrastructure. From then, its a matter of setting up your security, which is vital for a wireless network. I suggest using WPA, not WEP. WPA TKIP will be supported on most wireless cards, while WPA AES may not be as well supported. Your internet connection will not become any slower as a result of this, as a typical wireless connection speed is 54mbps. Wireless routers (not access points, you need a router) from Netgear and Belkin are good.
Hmm ... mine did get slower. When I set up my wireless connection its speed actually dropped to about half. I know its 54mbps like u said so it doesn't make sense. But still, when i do online d/l speed tests, i get like 5500mbps when I'm wired through the ethernet cable but when I take it out and switch to the wireless connection i'm getting only like 2500. (its WPA AES) I guess it's cuz the signal isn't strong?? - But hey, at least it shouldnt make any difference in your connection, schlo50. Cuz yours is only 1mb which is still less than the 2500 i was getting...
