cant find the answer too so thought id ask iv downloaded bittorrent but cant get it on and downloading.anyone help with this. also how can i open my other hdds in linux so i can say play my mp3s and download new things too and save in same area for use with xp and ubuntu so iv not got loads of files seperated between the two.
For all kinds of codex (for DivX, AVi, MP3...) u can use Automatix or EasyUbuntu (see on Google). And for that what u said it's best to create a Fat32 partition to share between Linux and Windows (or convert your windows partition to Fat32)

i did it through the bit torrent website but i cant find a start logo but i got something up and it said i had to type in server and name and some other crap but obviously i didnt know what to type. oh yeah on the subject of mounting u said convert to fat32 if i do this with my spare 80gb does that mean i can then mount it and also share that hdd between xp and ubuntu
That is not a good method for installing software. Bittorrent is in the debian repositories (and most likely Ubuntu). If you are using Ubuntu read this on installing software. That should get you started. You can forget the windows way of installing software: Go to software website Download what you want Run the 'installer.exe' In linux it is like this: Start the package manager (synaptic in Ubuntu) Search for software you want Select and press 'install' Much easier than the windows way IMO
just downloaded a few bit torrents which didnt seem to work but just did Ktorrent and its there now so should be able to start downloading again.
just need to sort out how i can get my mp3s from xp to ubuntu or will i have to copy them all to dvd then put them in ubuntu that way. stil cant figure how i can use the other hdd cant get it to mount whats the code to update in konsole iv forgot . u no so i can get all things iv done to get recognised and start working.
This guide may help you in mounting the windows drive. I am going to assume that you are using kubuntu. If it is NTFS, then you may be out of luck writing to that drive but it is not a problem to get it to read. I'm not sure what you mean.
NTFS is a completely proprietary file system, and so there is no fool proof way of writing to it. You can however, read from it with no problems. Please follow the instructions that kenji_san posted for mount your Windows partition, and you should be fine for read support. There is no way AFAIK to convert an NTFS partition into FAT32. It's possible to convert FAT32 to NTFS though. FAT32 is quite a bad file system, no security features and fragments like hell. Kubuntu is just a derivative of Ubuntu, with a different GUI. To play your mp3s, once you have mounted your Windows partition you should use an excellent player called Amarok to play your mp3s. You'll have to install an extra package for it to play mp3s (because of certain legal issues with the mp3 codec), but its very easy as Amarok walks you through it.
If you have enough room on your second HDD then I would recommend moving all your data off the windows drive and then shrink the NTFS partition and create a new FAT32 partition as a second partition on the first drive and move everything back. If you're on top of your backups then you can skip the first step. I do not know your partition layout so that's really all I can suggest. You could just move everything onto the second drive permanently but I don't know your system. Sharing files is very simple as long as your using FAT32. I believe that Ubuntu has an NTFS resizer but I wouldn't know.
I said that too. And for listening to music if u would like something like Winamp take XMMS it is old (many years have passed but sill no new version) but it is ok. AmaroK is cool too (but I still like XMMS more)!!!
Nah, XMMS is too old... Have you tried Beep Music Player? It's an updated version of XMMS written in GTK2 with nicer menus
