i know DSL is very small (about 50Mb) but has anyone tried Puppy its not much bigger than DSL (about 70Mb) any thoughts on Puppy ?
I haven't tried it myself but there are many, many great reviews on the net. I was thinking of puppy for an old pentium I that is laying around with a botched install of windows 95.
Good stuff. Keep those old computers alive Just because it won't run the latest Windows doesn't make it useless as so many people think. Older hardware is still very capable, even as old as a 486. You could give it a fresh leash of life and turn it into a firewall or basic workstation. My old ~333MHz, 192MB RAM laptop was left for dust by it's previous owner probably because it could barely run Windows XP. Well I've taken it, stuck a modern 2006 OS (xubuntu) on it and now it runs faster and more productively Also, I built an old P3 spec computer and turned it into a web server / firewall which supports 12+ users This otherwise worthless peice of hardware, in the eyes of a Windows Vista user, is actually on a par with a $2500 Cisco PXE (according to AT) I haven't used or read much about Puppy but it's great to see projects like this. If you wanted an uber light desktop you should look at WindowMaker or IceWM as your window manager
thankies, if i were to remove puppy WM and use WindowMaker or IceWM, how would i do that concidering the fact that puppy is live ? is that what you were suggesting mega ?
so to use IceWM i'd just boot the puppy live CD and install a new WM and write an iso to RAM disk and copy to a more perminent media (HDD) then boot the iso i created, would that do it ? i'll have a go
That sounds complicated! If you want use WM or IceWM you'd be better off using a Linux installation rather then a LiveCD
let be honest mega, when do i ever do anything easily, you say complicated, i say FUN anyway better get started
Hey Donkey If you are looking to try out another distribution you should download Elive 0.5. It's built around Enlightenment 17 which is an ultralight, eye candy window manager. Elive is built on top of Debian so it's got the familiar 'apt-get' etc.
thankies, i will try it, but first i'm doing another (hopefully) possible linux Sticky "Win users easy guide to linux" i pretty much know that for a thread to be granted Sticky status is not common, but it worth a try, cos the aim is to get as many users on linux as possible
