Wal-Mart has quite a bit of retail muscle, and when they say jump, vendors usually ask 'How high?'. The retail behemoth is telling the RIAA they want to sell CD's under $10 and still make a profit, according to ArsTechnica.

Now, the retailer is tired of losing money on CDs, and has told the music industry to lower prices, or else. Wal-Mart is looking to sell CDs for under $10 (still a rip-off in a world of $15 DVDs), and still make a profit. Here's a quote from the Rolling Stone coverage of this that gives you an idea of how much clout Wal-Mart has in the music industry:

    Keep your fingers crossed folks.

wait i don't understand we want walmart to make cd's cheaper. Wouldn't that be a bad thing for the whole industry. Even then i really don't like Walmart at all, i shun the place when i have to drive by

The thing is, the RIAA has been proven to artificially and excessively price CD's. I walk into Best Buy, and you're seeing CD's between $12-14, while a DVD movie runs about $20.

The RIAA is the company that keeps raising prices, shortchanges the artists it's apparently 'protecting', and willingly sues grandma with no internet, no PC, and who's been dead for five years.

Hmm ... okay I know there are a bunch of record labels. So what exactly is the RIAA and how does it fit in? Are u saying it's also one of the record labels? Just one of the major ones?

The RIAA isn't a label, but they're an industry organization that's there for promoting artists and certifying sales...at least from what I can tell. Oh, yeah, and suing dead grandmothers that never had a computer or internet connection...

No, we're talking about pre-recorded music CD's. Madonna, U2, Beastie Boys, Donny Osmond, Guns and Roses, etc. Pretty much any music CD you buy has part of it's price associated with the RIAA's 'protection' and promotion of the artist.
