Im thinking about building one of these media centre rigs (I have been for years now!) and would like to know what the usual way of doing it. I think my problem might be that ive not a clue how tv cards work. In honesty ive not read up much on the subject. Believe it or not I dont get much time on the net, the time I do get I spend it deleting junk mail and reading these forums. Do you get this card.... Hauppauge Impact VCB video input adapter - PCI which is supported by Linux Media Centre ( GeeXboX HomePage ) and plug a freeview set-top box into the card, then use a video card with tv-out to get it to my telly? Am I right in thinking I will still need to use the remote which will come with the freeview box to change the channels? And the Linux supported remote will select "watch tv" or "view images" and also the tv volume etc? I think ive made myself dizzy because I want to use one remote and I dont think its possible. It wont matter too much because we've always had two remotes. The sky one couldnt operate our telly! Also, when ive used tv-out to use my pc on the telly windows has always been out of focus a bit. (films and games have always looked fine) I just used the yellow phono plug (you know yellow, red and white) and the s-video out on the video card. Is windows in focus if I use the component video input? Our telly only has scart and that component video input. Ill need a new graphics card (mine is AGP and my rig only has PCI) but can you get video cards with component out? Eventually it would be nice to get the net on the telly, then I will have more time to surf! If windows is out of focus the net will be totally unreadable. Then id might as well buy a hdd recorder freeview box combo.
Yeah, there are cards with component video out. My 6600GT and 7900GS both have a dongle that connects to the TV-out which has component and S-Video connections.
Would windows be usable on a TV using s-video? Ive done a bit of reading up and ive always used a composite lead which is apparently crap! If I can I would like to use my old mx420, simply to save some money and its only got s-video. Though I have seen cards for £25 with DVI so maybe I should spend some cash!
