533fsb & Ddr2

    Hi!

    Would a Intel CPU w/ 533FSB be able to work on a mobo w/ DDR2 RAM?

    Yes, provided the motherboard supported that CPU to start with. Unlike AMD's Athlon64, Intel still uses the traditional CPU-chipset design with the memory controller in the northbridge, not the CPU. Therefore, the CPU is irrelevant to the memory type used.

    I was just wondering if having a CPU w/ 533FSB and DDR2 w/ like 533Mhz frequency would result in a incompatibility (sudden restarts, no working at all etc.) or in that the CPU becomes kind of a bottleneck (the DDR2 automatically works with a compatible frequency).

    No. If some RAM is rated up to 533MHz, it's guaranteed to work at that speed. Another factor is that, Intel uses a quad pumped bus for the FSB. In order to get the 533MHz FSB, you start with the base frequency of 133MHz and multiply by 4. The processor's clock speed is based off a separate multiplier and the base frequency.

    RAM speeds are like tire ratings. A tire that's rated up to 150MPH will work fine at 40MPH. It's the same concept with RAM.

    but to round things up a little bit, how low can I set the DDR2 frequency? The lowest setting for my DDR400 was something like 266MHz.

    The setting depends on the motherboard and chipset. It's usually set synchronously with the CPU's FSB, or base frequency in more recent times. You may have the option to run the RAM asynchronously, but I'm not sure if the current Core 2 design would benefit from it. I know the Athlon 64 does not, but that's another animal.
