Can anybody suggest a good dvd writer for my laptop.
a bare dvd writer drive will also do? also let me know any extra cables to be purchased in suc a case.
which are the good brands to look out for and any current deals up for grabs?

are you wanting to replace an existing internal CD / DVD or add a new external device (connected by USB, Firewire etc. etc.)

Plextor, HP, Sony, Philips, LG, Lite-ON...those all have respected internal drives, and I don't expect to see them change too much when they pop one of their drives in an external case.

Alternatively, you could look into the cost of an external USB or Firewire 5.25" case and pick out a DVD burner of your choice, which I'd recommend any of the above along with Pioneer drives.

well i think you should probaly wait about 3 or 4 months until dual layer RW discs / drives arrive (8.5Gb storage space, as opposed to 4.7Gb standard RW discs / drives)

the drives will probably also have lightscribe, if you can't wait i would suggest this[ot]i think you would be better to wait a few month[/ot]
BTW: DVD +/- r discs & drives are available now but DVD +/- RW dual layer discs / drives are not yet available
