ok heres my problem. yesterday the power went out at my house and and the phone line went out also. I know that because aol asked me to reconnect.( I have my line attached to a surge protector. i know it shouldnt be that) now everytime i try to dial in i get a bsod. ive tried many things including reinstalling aol(bsod as soon as the installer was logging on to the web) and restarting my computer. I even went as far as to repair my windows xp install which bsod when setup was "installing devices". This all leads me to believe something went wrong with my modem when the power went out. if thats what it is ill send my laptop for arranty service.
no not lightning but it had something to do with the power. i have the phone line going through a surge protector so i cant understand why it happened. i was just wondering if a bad modem was the cause of the bsods.
it could be the modem, but before trying another modem try pluging your modem directly into the phone line (not through the surge protector) then try a new RJ58 cable (between modem and phone line[ot]i think it's called RJ58, but i could be wrong[/ot]
i really wish i could but i thought it was a bug in the software and put in my win xp cd and tried repairing it and it bsod during the "installing devices" and now it wont boot (got all my data backed up though) it just restarts the installer and bsods when it gets to that point in the installation.
Open the case and remove the modem, then try to start the computer to see if it is in fact the modem. It could be your power supply going out.
I wish I could but i have a laptop. its under warranty so i was wondering if i should send it in for service.
well i wouldnt think it would be that but i will do a clean windows install to rule that out.(i tried repairing windows and it crashed twice and windows wont boot without completing the setup)
i just reinstalled windows (which actually worked for some reason) and when i installed the modem driver it blue screened so at this point i am almost completely sure it is a hardware problem with the modem or the power supply thanks to everybody for the help
