    PNY GeForce 6600 GT overheating

I've been using RivaTuner to monitor my temperature because Ntune's monitor keeps unselecting my GPU after I check it.

According to Riva, I'm getting a idle core temperature of 70 degrees celcius. That seems really hot considering the usual load temp. for this card is apparently 85 or so. When playing games this thing shoots up to above 100 degrees celcius. Is there something permamently wrong with my card? Should I try a new cooling solution on it?

Right now I have one fan blowing in from the side of the case, two blowing out the back (though the one is terrible), and one blowing out the top of the case. The better of my two fans on the back is RIGHT above the card.

I started looking into the problem when I got artifacts in Neverwinter Nights 2. I never saw them before playing that game, but now I get them everywhere, including World of Warcraft. It is really only during Neverwinter Nights 2 that it will get so bad that my computer freezes, though WoW did crash on me once.

What can I do to solve this problem? I've seen a temp as high as 119 degrees celcius, and I know that is not good AT ALL.

From what you say, metalium, it appears there's no active cooling directly on the card - only on the case?

I think you should try several temperature monitoring applications. See, it might be software releated - in my PC - a program shows that one component is @ like -200 degrees celcius.

And btw - is the fan rotating when the card's under load?

I tried to adjust my fan speed to 100% on my GPU, but nTune will not let me select the box to do so. Everything under GPU fan is greyed out, but there is a little fan on the card. Also, Nvidia Monitor will not let me track my GPU temperature. Is there something wrong with my card or my software?

What card have you got? Older cards dont have temperature sensing or Fan speed adjusting, my old FX5200 had a fan but i couldent adjust the fan speed or see the temperature.

Its a PNY Verto GeForce 6600 GT. I bet that the fan will only run at one speed. Also, it has the original nVidia cooling specifications and its running at 63 degrees with my room fan pointed into the case. Do you guys think a replacement for the stock cooler would help improve things?

Also, if a card has been running way too hot for awhile is there not chance of fixing it? The card runs hot but I only run into problems during Neverwinter Nights 2. I can still play DoD and WoW just fine, and I can play Medieval 2 Total War for several hours at a time without any trouble. Problem is, the damn thing gets up over 100 degrees celcius during some games.

Well, nVidia seems to think that 127*C is when you get into trouble. Unless PNY did a real funky custom card, you should be able to get a different cooler and install it in place of the current one. Note that doing this will void the warranty of the card. Unless a company does some adjustments themselves to allow for it, video cards typically do not allow for user defined fan speeds.

I still dont understand controls to adjust the fan speed... why wouldntyou want your fans working at full pelt?

My X800XT PE allows user defined fan speeds, and temperature monitoring.

Metalium, I merged this with your other thread that's in the same vein.
