I've been looking at motherboards for an Intel Core 2 Duo and would like to know is there a huge performance difference between the motherboard chipsets?
The price difference is quite large so I would prefer to go with a 965P over a 975X chipset.

Could somebody please explain to me the advantages of the 975X.

The memory controller is a tad faster than the 965. The 975X supports Crossfire, where the 965 doesn't support any sort of multi-GPU technology...not to mention motherboards typically only come with 1 PCIe x16 slot.

The 975X has been out longer and just by that alone, it's more mature in terms of support.

In terms of real world performance, there's virtually no difference betwen the chipsets in most cases. Even in select instances where there is a difference, you'd only be able to tell with benchmarks. It's highly doubtful you'd notice these differences.

    Thanks a lot B
I was going to buy a 975X but it's unnecessary, so I can save myself a few £'s.
