    Hi.

I've just used my laptop and new LG Rewriter and Nero software to create a data DVD using a DVD +RW disc (Philips). This can be read by the rewriter itself and a desktop PC in work but the laptop can't read it. I get a message about the disk either being not formatted or in a format not readable by Windows. Any idea what might be wrong? Laptop and work PC are both XP machines and the laptop does read other disks.

    Thanks.

How old is the laptop and , I know it sounds really silly, can the DVD-ROM drive read other + disks? + is a fickle format...... You will be surprised, but some drives out there will not read + disks or RW disks for that matter. But that really depends on the age of the laptop.

    Thanks for this.

Hmmm. Well it's an IBM thinkpad that my daughter bought secondhand a year or two ago - Pentium 2 with XP SP1 I believe. So, yes, it's a bit old. I hadn't thought about what other types of disk it can read - I'll have to check this out. I thought +RW would be better than -RW, so maybe that was a bad choice. I'm just getting into CD/DVD burning and what a minefield!!

    Thanks again.

    PII laptop?
Have a look at the front of the CD Tray... does it say DVD or Compact disk?
I have a strong feeling this babes will only play CD's. However, if you want to stick with this laptop, see if you can find a DVD-ROM drive for it. I doubt they will be very expensive.

Oops - I have a bad feeling that I'm about to look pretty stupid. No, hang on, I'm sure I watched the first few miniutes of an old Movie I got free in a newspaper a while ago in that drive. Wouldn't that have been a DVD?

I'll check later tonight (I'm at work at present) and will let you know later.

    Cheers.

    Hi again.

I've just checked and the laptop has a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-C2512 fitted. My daughter has just told me that, while at college, she and others had loads of problems using RW disks and eventually gave up on them. Perhaps I'm just going to have to accept that they won't work reliably, if at all, in the Laptop. They do work OK in the external DVD Rewriter that I used to create them, so perhaps that'll have to do.

I tried the disk in my daughters PC, which has a low spec but quite new motherboard fitted - it worked OK but then froze the PC when I tried moving between folders.

Thanks for the help. Any suggestions for a 'fix' welcome.

    Cheers

I found this on the Toshiba site:

    Applicable read/write formats
    # Applicable disc formats:

    #Audio CD
    # CD+(E)G
    # CD-MIDI
    # CD-R
    # CD-ROM
    # CD-ROM XA
    # CD-RW
    # CD-TEXT
    # CD-i
    # CD-i Bridge (Photo-CD)
    # CD-i Bridge (Video-CD)
    # DVD-R
    # DVD-RAM Ver. 1.0
    # DVD-RAM Ver. 2.1
    # DVD-ROM (DVD-10)
    # DVD-ROM (DVD-18)
    # DVD-ROM (DVD-5)
    # DVD-ROM (DVD-9)
    # Multisession CD-Extra
    # Multisession CD-R
    # Multisession CD-RW
    # Multisession Photo-CD

Unfortunately not DVD-RW or +RW. I tried to locate a firmware update but there were none. I suppose that you might need to change drives if you are looking for a drive which will read DVD-+RW.
Regardless, try a DVD-RW. It might work ....

Thanks for the info. In fact I was debating whether to buy +RW or DVD-ROM. Seems I made the wrong choice. Perhaps I'll try other formats or maybe I could try contacting Toshiba to see what they say. Many thanks for all the help.

    Cheers.

    Oops

Sorry, I meant that I had a choice of +RW and DVD-RAM, not ROM.
