I have a Sony VAIO VGC-RB43 Desktop running Windows XP Pro. I have recently had a problem with the CD-ROM drive on the machine. The icon for the drive shows up in the My Computer window, but it does not recognize when there is a CD in the drive. I have tried numerous CDs, both music and CD-ROM, and anytime I click on the drive it just gives me a message to insert a CD. The other drive on the computer (a DVD-RW drive) is working just fine. According to the computer and Windows Troubleshooting Guide, everything is working fine, but obviously it is not. Any suggestions on what might be going on and how I might go about fixing it (apart from installing a new CD drive)?
I haven't checked the light (if there is one). There's an annoying flip-down cover for each drive. However, the CD does spin initially and sounds like it's being read, but then it stops.
