I'm currently building a computer. so far I've purchased the case, motherboard (ASRock xFire-eSATA2) processor (intel p4 3.2Ghz 800MHz 2MB L2 cache 64EMT) ram (legend 2GB dual memory 1024) and my power supply (silverstone zeus 750W) I'm now confused as to what graphics card to get. ive aprox $500 NZD to spend max maybe $560 NZD. I've been looking at 7900GT, 7950GT, 7800GTX, and the new 8800GTS 320Ghz models. what should i be looking for/what would be best? I'm stuck as my motherboards support list doesn't list any of these but after e-mailing ASRock they replied with. QUOTE: "We are sorry we don't have this card for testing(NVIDIA GEFORCE 7900GTO).in general cases, the white PCI-E slot will accept most standard PCI-E X16 cards. We suggest you to contact the card vendor to see if this card have been tested on our motherboard or not." oh and I've already taken into consideration that the 8800GTS has the new Microsoft DirectX 10. but still cant decide. help is much appreciated cherz oh and one other point i forgot to make. i am currently a student studying 3D animation and therefore will be working with both Maya and 3DS Max, would getting a quatro card be a better option?
Given that you won't be gaming, then, yes, nVidia's Quadro series, or ATi's FireGL would be better suited to your needs. They're aimed for precision rather than speed, which gaming oriented cards are. The higher the model number, the better performance it will give.
im also taking game design as an added paper this year. if i was to be gaming also then what would be best?
Both the Quadro and the 8800 will suit the bill fine, for both gaming and design. If you weigh out what you'll be doing more graphics/gaming and then make your decision on the greater sum. i.e. Im going to play loads of games and do a bit of animation design, I think ill go for the 8800. And vice versa.
thanx for help guys. i just now got to weigh up weather i want 320MB or 128MB coz with quadro 128 is all i can afford.
Just look at the prices...if 320MB is costing you nearly the next bigger card or 128MB then you should go with the Bigger card because that will definitely give you better performance otherwise bigger is always good.
theres quite a price jump the Quadro FX 560 PCI Express is $560 the next model up is $880 and then it grows exponentially to $4k so i think ill bee sticking to the $580 for the 8800. is there any brands i should be awear of? currently looking at either Gigabyte or xfs or Albatron coz they are cheapest, possibly asus but think ill be paying for the game packages that come with it.
