Hey, I think my X800XT PE has only got a couple of months left, I think its showing signs of giving up, for instance, In some games like GTA SA, the computer was constantly resetting after like 10 mins of gameplay, so I ran ATi Tools and found the temperatures were raching 85Degrees, so I cleaned the fan, changed the case and it's max was around 79-80 degrees and the problems seemed to stop, the idle temperatures are around 45-49 degrees which are normal, anyway, about a week ago was playing BF1942, I exited to the desktop, maybe CTD I cant remember, then all of a sudden the screen went blank, came back up full of garbled crap like all colours and squares, really it looked like one of those pictures were your looking at the inside of a CPU except hundres of overlays and it was all like moving, I think this points to overheating/bad memory, anyway I just restarted the computer and all was right, but now every time my dad played Drealfall: The Longest Journey, the computer almost deffenitly resets instantly about 10-20 mins in game, did this about 10 times, so he tried Dreamfall in Windows Vista, and it was ok, lased longer but then, the screen just froze and the computer crashed, so i restarted, my dad went down so I went onto BF1942, and then what happened?, I got a Blue Screen, just a Blank Blue screen, so I reset the computer, anyway that was it for now, couple of days later I loaded into Vista for my dad, and the screen was all garbled again, so I reset, that soon sorted out the problem again, anyway thats been it untill today, my latest problem was, I was just on the desktop, and everything froze except the arrow, and stuff was slightly garbled in parts, then the arrow froze, and screen went black, and the VPU Reset error came up. Now I know this is not due to my CPU Overclock, so all I can think of is the Graphics Card, what do you all think?
That does sound like a video card issue. It probably wouldn't hurt to break out Memtest 86 and Prime95/StressPrime, but the symptoms your posting lead me to the same conclusion you did.
I wouldn't necessarilly blame it on ASUS which in my reading does pretty well in the graphics front but sometimes they just go bad after not too long. While I didn't experiece the same issues you did with the artifacting my 6800 did die on me after about a year or so and XFX is a pretty respected brand. It might be worth just keeping the card at default speeds if you haven't and seeing if it can make it through a bit of 3d mark or something but otherwise it might be upgrade time. Which i suppose isnt' all bad.
personally, I don't think dx10 is that great yet. Yes, it has better shaders, etc...but there aren't any games out there that can make use of it yet. If you wanted to run Oblivion at max settings then it'd be worth it? lol But, I think people might be able to do it on a 7900GT maybe 7900GS.
It's worth having the DX 10 functionality sure, it would be silly to upgrade to a DX 9 part now but the GS isn't totally blowing the X1950XTX out of the water or anything unfortunately, though it still holds it's own for the price I suppose. It's still a pretty strong pic, I'd even give a nod to the 320Mb version concidering the lower price but I'd still like ATI to finally release their damn cards once and for all.
I wouldent touch a 320mb, not enough memory for some upcoming games I rekon, anyway its not exatly hard to run Oblivion at max lol, my X800XT PE can almost do it
