I just received a new mainboard, the Gigabyte GA-81945GZME-RH. It seems to operate normally, except that it beeps a low tone periodically through the internal speaker that lasts for 10-20 seconds at times. Sometimes it does it during post, sometimes randomly while in the OS (Fedora 6). There are no BIOS or OS messages or errors, and I've checked the temps in the BIOS, which it shows to be around 35-40C under normal use (alarm is set to 60C).

Anyone heard of this type of thing?

well, in a sense this is normal, granted i have no idea how to translate the beeps, but they mean something, or are saying something. So it is ether that there is actually something wrong with the board, or the bios is messed up and it is beeping for no reason. My suggestion would be to flash the bios, which Gigabyte makes real easy, and if that doesn't fix it it would be a good idea to return it, as it might burn up or something. But that is purely speculation.

It's really more of a buzz, but definitely coming from the internal speaker, and definitely digital, not like a speaker short or anything like that. Usually starts as soon as I hard start the computer, but goes off after a few seconds, then periodically while in my OS.

I've updated the bios to F8, the latest for the mobo. I've also torn the computer apart and rebuilt it, including moving the RAM to the other slot. I've run memtest86 on it with no errors.

I've also disabled all of the PC health alarms in the bios, even though the bios reports the processor running at 41C, and the fans running fine. This didn't stop the buzz either.

I suppose it's possible it could be the new power supply, lack of wattage? How might I test for this? It's a 420W, and I'm not running anything but the mainboard, fans, hard drive and CDROM drive. Onboard video, sound, nic. No expansion cards.

well, if all else fails and everything is fine, you can just remove the speaker.

Yeah, I've been running it for a few days now, checking the temps, and for any errors. I finally just disconnected the speaker from the mobo and it's working fine. Thanks.

I'd in inclined to think that your temps are to blame. I've seen quite a few motherboards that beep when the temperature goes above a certain limit. The idle temps that you are reading can rise dramatically when the system is under load.
You might consider buying some Artic Freezer 5 thermal paste and applying it to the CPU. Artic Freezer can reduce the temperatures dramatically.
