I've had my computer for a couple of years now, but a bit more than a year ago, my DVD+CD drive started messing up. First of all, it would not show any files in any CD's I put in. It will read the CD, the little CD loading cursor showed, but once that disappeared nothing happened, and it would show no files on the CD. Then, my burner stopped working. Whenever I put in a DVD-R/RW, it would think it was a CD in some programs (aswell as Explorer), and in others (like WMP) it would say there is no CD/DVD in the drive. It still reads DVD's, but who knows when that's going to go? I have found no problem with the hardware itself, and I have spoken to some people who have suggested updating my firmware, but I have no idea what that is or where to get it. I should also mention my brothers computer was bought at the same time as mine, with exactly the same everything, and his drive still reads and burns. I don't think it is a virus, since I've scanned my computer countless times, and found nothing. It's really annyoing me since now is when I need it most. I've had to burn and read CD's and DVD's from other computers around my house, but it has become so inconvenient.

    Thanks in advanced,
    Ben.

In the UK you can get Dual layer 16x DVD-RW's for under £20 from online retailers, i dont know how much that would be in Australia but it might be worth looking into a new drive if there that cheap (it would also be an upgrade, as i doubt your current drive was as fast when it worked!)

I was considering buying a new one, but I really wanted to make sure that it was fixable or not. Thanks for the help, but I'm going to wait to see what other people suggest before I go out and buy one ;)

ok, since you have two computers which are very similar, have you tried to take your DVD writer and try it in your brothers computer? if it doesn't work then you will need to buy a new one.

What make/model is your DVD writer? We can't really point you to how you can update your firmware, unless we know...
