That driver download you referenced is to a bundled driver set which includes nVidia, SIS, Intel and Via. To list your video controller through Linux, do the following: Code: lspci |grep VGA Of course, the manual is probably right; if you have a Via northbridge, it'd be an S3 UniChrome Pro IGP. But if you're ever unsure of what drivers to use, you can always use "vesa" as a failsafe until you get it sorted out.
over complicating things, thats not like me yeah, VIA northbridge[ot]vesa only works @ 1024 X 768 then after 2nd reboot screen is "scrambled"[/ot]thankies for pointing me in the right direction:doh: found driver here just rebooting into console mode, let you know if it works
To install the nVidia driver on Kubuntu, you do not need to download the driver from nVidia's website. Just type sudo aptitude install nvidia-glx, then edit your xorg.conf and change the Driver to read Driver="nvidia"
...if it was an Nvidia card. Which it's not. But he probably already has the Unichrome drivers anyway, just needs to choose the right ones.
thankies[ot]i'm not sure it is NVidea but i'll try it anyway[/ot]if not working by monday, i'll flutter my eyelashes at dad, hopefully he'll buy me a PCIe X16 card BTW: thankies for putting up with my noob ish behavior, thanks all Edit: maybe i wont mega's suggestion
