My oldest of 3 HDD is in the process of dying, so I want to get rid of it. I use it only for storage, and my OS is installed on a different drive, but whenever I unplug the old one, windows won't start. I get an error saying that my ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt. All I have to do is plug the old HDD back in, and windows runs fine. I have tried using the repair console on my windows install CD, but it tells me that access is denied. Any thoughts?

I have 3 HDDs in my computer now, but one of them is failing. So when all of them are plugged in, windows boots up. But when I unplug the one that is failing, the windows installed on my main drive won't start.

typically the ntoskml.exe error has 7 causes
    • 1. Keyboard issue
    • 2. Miscellaneous corruption
    • 3. Corrupt boot.ini file.
    • 4. Missing boot.ini file.
    • 5. Missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe file.
    • 6. NT installed on a partition bigger then 7.8GB
    • 7. Corrupted hard disk drive or severely corrupted Win install
