unofficially some vendors (well they did with Win9x) actually sell OEM versions without offering any support, just do a google search to find the cheapest

Be wary of "OEM software" unless you are an accomplished hacker...MS is trying to force home users to buy very expensive software and one way of doing this is to block updates for OEM installs - I have no experience of this personally, but reportedly, it appears to be the case....should yr mbd fail, you might find you need to plead with MS. You may save some money initially but the consequences could be considerable later-on.
This grey area is probably all the reasons I need to avoid buying an expensive Win OS.
However, yr gear (list) looks expensive; why not go the whole hog and pay up? At least then you should be in the clear if any component fails.
I was in PC World recently and the prices for Vista were amazing! It would be cheaper to buy their PC with Vista than build your own....the discount on the software more than paid for the hardware premium. Of course you wouldn't have the best speed components, but close!
