    HELLO CLEVER PEOPLE,

I have an old laptop, (dell latitude c600) which only has 128mb of memory. A friend of mine got some more for me from a comp shop, it was kingston and said c133 on it. It was a 256mb one.

When friend put it in it wasnt recognised. (Friend works in computers by the way so I trusted him). Tried moving each of the two memories around to check both slots were working, they were. Checked the internet it said that c133 should work in c600 laptop. It didnt. Now on order is a c100.

The guy in the shop was saying when memory put in next time, if its not recognised then the BIOS needs updating or upgrading or whatever. He added that I should only upgrade BIOS by one version. Friend said take no notice of that, upgrade to latest version.

If the memory is not recognised this time, and BIOS needs updating, which version should I install and why??? PLEASE HELP, Im useless with computers.

Also, any clues why the c133 didnt work when dell website said it should? Must it be the BIOS then? Am scared to update this, as megamaced posted a warning on doing this. ALSO, dont know how to do it anyway.

    :(

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE GUYS AND GIRLS

Have you tried using the new RAM without the old RAM in your laptop?

also, can you type up EVERYTHING that is printed on the new rams label? (or take a picture of it and attach it to one of your posts).

    thanks

    Hi Impotence,

    Thanks for replying.

I dont have the memory anymore, I took it back to the shop. The new one is on order.

After opening my memory slot just now (how brave of me) it says pc100MHz, Kingston Brand (not c100 derrrr) and the one I bought said pc133 MHz on it.

The new memory (256mb) was tried on its own in both memory slots and didnt work either time. Must it be the BIOS then?

    Cheers

    Kerry

    I have 2x 256MB sticks, and there both 100Mhz

I'm just going to have a look for my old 128MB stick, to check what it was... i will edit this post in a few minutes!

EDIT: I Can't find my old memory at the moment, but i would assume that the memory you have on order is going to work...

I dont know if memory is going to work!! I hope so, but if it doesnt work, the comp shop guys says its because the BIOS needs updating?

I dont know which version to update to, and I dont know how to do it. I dont have the internet at home, so I need to download the correct BIOS and instructions and take it home so its ready to do if the memory isnt recognised.

Any help/advice with updating the BIOS?

    cheers

    K

I would suggest you take things one at a time, as megamaced said, don't flash your BIOS unless you have good reason too.... so wait and see if your memory works first! :)

Everytime you post in this thread i am told about it, so post up how things go with your new ram when you get it :)
