When I was partitioning my hard drive with a new Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 install, It asked what kind of files should I partion/format the hardrive with. It asked in FAT format or NTFS. I choose NTFS because I read on a "Building your own PC guide" most people should format their hard drive with the NTFS files. I no longer know where that guide went. It was in newegg.com's Help and info section but since its last update that website has been eliminated from the site. I believe it was called: "Tom's build your own PC guide."
Anyways, I breifly read about the FAT and NTFS files from google search but it was too long and complex for me to understand. I would just like to know if you will notice a difference in your PC when used with a hardrive formatted between FAT and NTFS file systems? What file system do you prefer to format your hardrive? Do you use separate software to format your hardrive? What software do you recommend? I heard windows XP hardrive partitioning/formatting is not the greatest, is this true? That is all for now. I have a lot more to ask later.

    My Pc:
    Windows XP Media Center 2005
    Abit AN8 32x Nforce4 Sli
    AMD Athlon socket 939 3700+
Seasonic M12 600 watt modular power supply 85 plus
    XFX 7800 GT
    Seagate 160gb SATA 2 hd
    ASUS DVD ROM

NTFS is the best (most secure) FS (File System) FAT is restricted to 2Gb & i think FAT32 is restricted to 2Tb (terabytes, a thousand Gb)
in the general use of Win - no, but your system would be less secure
personally i use linux, so i generally use ext3 partitions
    *nix
if using FAT or FAT32 then, yes, it's true. if using NTFS then your using the best that MS has to offer[ot]but personally i dont like MS[/ot]
    ask away

Also, if the power in your computer fails you're less likely to lose data on an NTFS partition than on a FAT32 partition.
