I just wanted to lay down some info on DirectX 10. I've been reading about it all day when I should have been working (heh) and I learned some intersting things.

    1. Currently DirectX 10 is a windows vista exclusive as part of their bully tactics to force people to buy vista. Microsoft has stated that they may release a watered down version for XP at some point, but no news on that for a while..

    2. As of this writing, there are 3 games out which support DirectX10;
Call of Juarez, Lost Planet, and Company of heroes. We can expect maybe 15 by the end of the year.

    3. A number of things were taken out of direct x in this version, including support for hardware audio acceleration.

    4. Nvidia cards running in vista under DX10 have gotten an amazing amount of complaints, so much so that people are starting a class action lawsuit against nvidia for not supporting there hardware.

    5. (Gaming in Vista, not directly related) There are tons of games with compatibility issues in Vista. Being forced into Vista for DirectX10 just doesnt seem like a good trade.

Now I admit this is really biased against DirectX10 but I'm a little upset with microsoft. In the interest of fairness someone should post the other side of the argument. The reason I wrote this post, primarily, is so that people know that DX10 is a vista exclusive, at least for now. I almost bought a DX10 card without realizing this, so I figured I'd share the info. Apologies if this is old news, and everyone knew but me.

I believe it was released without support but was later patched to include it, which would explain how I missed it.

Well, Microsoft sets the rules. There's nothing that says you have to run Windows, nor is Microsoft forcing you. If Microsoft had to support all their software indefinitely, they'd still be supporting DOS and Windows 1.0.

You'll have that. Same thing happened with past DX releases, nothing new. Actually, this is common with API's and software. Instant adaption doesn't happen in this reality.

DX10 is a major change from DX9, so much so that MS has both in Vista.

As already mentioned, DX10 is quite new and different from past DX versions. nVidia has been working on newer drivers which seem to be much better than when Vista was first released. At that time, nVidia had about a month to work with the RTM version of Vista and provide good drivers. The driver interaction, from what I understand, is vastly different from other Windows versions. If that's the case, nVidia had learn a whole new set of rules and have drivers out within a month. You're not going to get that without bugs.

Nobody says you have to buy Vista. There are no games out currently that require DX10. Also, do you honestly believe that Microsoft, or any other company is going to be able to test every single program while writing a new OS? This alone means the OS is going through changes regularly. Additionally, new software and games comes out all the time.
Futhermore, in newer software, it's typically the responsibility of the software/game manufacturer to make sure the game works. You wouldn't necessarily blame SuSe, Linus Torvalds, or Red Hat if a program didn't work under Linux, so why is Microsoft being blasted here?

You're right, there arent any games that require Directx 10, but there are a few new games that are vista exclusive. I just don't remember this many problems when xp came out. Anyway I suppose I was a bit harsh, and I am really glad to see the other side of the argument here, that's kind of what I was looking for.

Well, if a game requires Vista, that's not really Microsoft's fault. Excluding Halo 2, can you point out which games the company has told the production company the game must be Vista only?

Oh, there were problems with XP as well. The thing with Vista is there's probably spite for the DX10 carrot Microsoft dangles with the OS. Also consider how long it's been since XP was released. With more and more people having a computer (or six), wouldn't you think that there's more people to gripe about problems?

dx10 is a complete change in texturing mechanism that's why the hd2900xt is not good like x1950xt at all

there are no games for dx10 big b you're right, but the newer ones will be just for it microsoft is sealing the gates

good news are on, sp1 is going to be released by judgement =) but i don't care at all today i just uninstalled it completely and bought the hd2900xt yesterday, and fully recommend the card to everyone tests are not the reality at all

by the way i made halo 2 work on suse 10 =) at last

if this will be completely available for crysis, why use a vista =)

the explanation will come through about a month, still got problems sometimes (returning to desktop etc.) if i can fix it, i'm gonna save you from this tormention

as i can say clearly now, f**k microsoft and the damned vista =)

by the way are there any c++ or c# programmers also knowing delphi and using linux? i may need help in further times for this project maybe
