ive been having a few problems with my version of vista and dont kno if its the copy of vista or hardware on my pc.
basically, on the main desktop sometimes i get random freezes where i cannot click on any icon apart from whatever is already open, e.g if it happens in word i can click save as etc but not the windows orb in the bottom left. the only way to correct th eproblem is to press ctrl+alt+delete and then close that, then a few mins later the problem comes back.

any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated

What version of word are you using? Try this, download another Word Processor like ABI word, and see if it will still freeze. The New microsoft word 2007 is buggy. I use 2003, it is more stable. Your problem can be from a software or
hardware.. You have to narrow it down.

Do you have access to another OS, like XP ? Vista is buggy and they do not have all the kinks out of it yet, Random freezing comes from the video card,
most of the time. check under event viewer to see any errors. Did this pc ever run right to begain with ? Did you biuld this pc ? have to narrow it down ..

yeh i built it and it was perfect to start with. but lately its been running slower than usual too. i suppose i could switch back to xp but im really keen on getting a dx10 card for upcoming games such as crysis

If you have a spare hard drive sitting around, that might not be a bad idea.

Have you paid attention to the processes that are running when your system freezes? Have you checked the Event Logs?

You cant install Dx9 over dx10,vistas default is dx10

Which is backwards comp with most dx9 cards.
