i want to try and overclock my cpu to around 3ghz and im just wondering how easy it is and what i have to do. thanks
Looks easy on paper. Looking at doing the same as you once I put the system together so will be interested to see what people suggest. In my case, as I'm after a 1333 FSB motherboard I've been told to set the FSB at 333 so with the multiplier at 9 it will give a CPU speed of 3GHz. Shouldn't need to change the voltage either so I've heard. There are guides out there that will help, some are linked on this site.
Overclocking isn't difficult but it will take a lot of patience and some methodical work in order to get the best performance you can out of your processor. The best thing to do is to check out some of the threads already written around the subject to get a feel for it.... http://www.hardwareforums.com/overclock-cooling-sticky-11485/
Overclocking to the point where you get a performance increase is very, very easy. Overclocking to the point where you get the perfect optimal performance is a bit harder. Try to find a website documenting OCĂng your specific chip(Just google it). Now using these websites may not give you perfect information, but its a good starting point. Just remember that bios reset jumper on your motherboard if you hit something where you cant boot.
You can overclock your processor to a point, Over that point will cause damage, and will over heat. 2.4 Will come close to 3.0 by overclocking... But I would try to get about 2.95 to be safe.. Anything over that might get unstable.
