I'm currently trying to troubleshoot a problem on my gf's comp and it is driving me crazy! It's quite old AMD Athlon 1400+ 512MB XP SP2. The problem is that whenever the mouses is moving the cpu usage is over 90%, when the mouse stops the usage drops to normal idle levels, move the mouse 90%, stop back to idle. You get the picture. I have no idea wqhat is causing it. I have tried cancelling various tasks in task manager to no avail, tried different mice (all optical i have to say, dont have a roller ball one any more!) Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

    Many thanks

Have you checked what tasks are using the most amount of resources? Are any of the tasks related to the mouse? For example, have you installed any mouse theming programs?

You may have a faulty mouse driver, assuming you are using a USB mouse and installed the drivers manually. You might try upgrading the driver. If you haven't installed a driver manually then I think the problem might lie elsewhere.

Check the Windows Event Viewer for system information and error messages. You might find some clues in there.
