Hello, first off here are my basic specs:
    Mobo: Asus P4G8X
    CPU: Intel P4 2.8ghz hyperthreaded socket 478
    ram: 1gb (2x512mb pc 2100)
    Video:Nvidia FX 5600 256mb

    now for the problem

I recently purchased the P4 2.8 ghz ht cpu and upon installing it in my board I activated the HT in my bios, and when I reboot my system it the cpu's appeared as two 1.4ghz cpu's, upon booting into winxp pro in the system under control panel it shows intel p4 2.8ghz and under that it shows 1.4ghz
and when I go into the bios to change the cpu multiplier the internal multiplier is locked at 14x, and my external is adjustable from 100 to 400 in increments of 1.
now correct me if I'm wrong but should the internal multiplier of a 2.8ghz cpu not be at 28x???
I can overclock the system using the external multiplier :D
but I am afraid of overclocking my new cpu and damaging it:dry:

if there are any suggestions I would greatly apreciate them.
I have the most recent bios and chipset updates for my board.
as well as the most recent drivers for everything,

also if anyone could explain the process of safley overclocking my ram so I could get more out of it that would be great, I am very strapped for cash and can not afford alot of upgrades. I will be purchasing heatsinks for my ram.

the multiplier shouldn't be 28x, because you prob have a FSB of 800, thus meaning you have a mobo clock of 200 making your 14x multiplier reasonable.

    me, I have a multiplier of 23x - 133 mobo freq and 533 FSB

hence - mobo freq will be equal to the freq you get when you divide your cpus clock through its multiplier.

    Front Side Bus

    My FSB is 533\400 mhz

if I increase the mobo multiplier to 200 from it's current 100 that would take my cpu speed to 2.8ghz but would that not fry my processor even though my processor is a 2.8ghz cpu?

what CPU clock does My Computer -> Properties (or Control Panel -> System; or Windows key + Break key) show?

you most probably won't be able to go with that motherboard frequency too high (approx. some 50hz, but that may vary a bit) - your PC will simply not start and you'll have to reset CMOS.

well your bios is programmed for old cpu if you reset cmos it will simply cleared and your cpu will be 2.8ghz

you bought a new 2.8ghz ht these days, i can't believe it even the athlon 64 3200+ is better than it also cheaper

here is what appears in my control panel and system menu, as you can see it says I have a 2.8ghz processor but only have access to 1.4ghz of it, what I am trying to do is get access to the other 1.4ghz if that is possible.

again any and all suggestions are welcome.

    All's well

After many comunications among many of my friends and tech friends
We have determined that all is as it should be with my board and processor, :) as I am new to the dual core, dual processor and hyperthreading processor world I was very confused upon what is what with my cpu and bios.:O

I was not aware that a hyperthreaded processor was just an early attempt at dual core and that my processor is in fact 2.8ghz split down the middle.

I thank you all for your input and if I have any further problems I will know where to go.
