Hi, i recently bought a new XpertVision 8500gt super, all seemed to be going well as in, it runs all of my games perfectly, but recently the fan on the card has been making a very very loud grinding sound from time to time and the sound slowly gets louder and the fan gradually comes to an almost complete stop. there is definately nothing stuck in the fan and sometimes it does work properly. I have sent it back to be repaired, they sent me it back and it still does it... any ideas on whats wrong?
are you sure it's the GPU cooler and not the chipset cooler BTW: i've being looking for a replacement fan for 8800gts, but haven't had any luck, just out of interest your motherboard isn't an Asus A8N-SLI Premium, is it ?
No its not, im not sure what it is though :S. The pc in question is a brand new dell dimension E520 and its definatly not any of the other fans on the thing as there is only one big one at the front that cools everything and that is preactically silent, infact when i fist took the case of to install the card i didnt even realise it was on untill i felt a cold breeze on my hand as i reached for the pci-express slot. I really cant work out what it is thats making the gpu fan do it, do you think it could be the motor turning the fan?
for a temporary fix you could try spraying some WD-40 at the center of the fan, is it i standard 3 / 4 cm fan ? because if it is you could replace it of you may require a low profile fan like this vantec iceberg BTW: turn your system off and allow the WD-40 to evaporate (about 5 minutes) leaving only the parts lubricated, does that do any good ? you may have to reapply WD-40 if the fan starts grinding again, just try to remember where spraying the WD-40 works best
I dont really want to try the WD-40 just incase i get it somewhere im nto meant to and it breaks something else. The fan isnt a standard fan there is a picture here: Xpertvision, Inc. the heat sink is rather large.could i replace this fan with a standard one? if i could that would be a great help as the fan on here isnt very good anyway and i have some overheating problems on some games when i run them on high settings.I tried looking for a replacement fan designed for the 8500GT but i couldnt find one either but the 8600 is a more popular model so you might have more luck with that one.
