My computer was always displaying.......improper shut down ...when booting up and running scan disk.
I tried a thorough scandisk and the computer froze up.
Tried to restore and error #46 appeared
    Tried again and error#48 appeared.
Tried again and all i get is the windows ME screen with a beep then the option of second chance or restore, when i try either option the screen flicks back to these options so can get no further.
I think hard drive has errors/bad or damaged sectors on it, any help would be appreciated.
It is a Tiny 1gig , 256ram with 40gig hard drive running windows ME.

Can you boot from the windows ME install/recovery CD's that 'should' have come with your computer?

In windows XP cd's you can try to repair the operating system, buts it's ages since I worked with ME.

Do you have a second computer you could move your hard drive to to recover your data before you start playing? Best be safe than sorry :D

    Best of luck

I have a widows ME restore CD and floppy and it always worked before now. This time it seems to be in a loop and goes back to the restore/second chance prompt which does not respond any more but before it does,a page full of data flicks on for a millisecond. I end up turning the power off by pushing in and holding the power button. I can,t get a DOS screen up and am left with an A:> prompt after the non responsive restore page which responds to each entry with - bad command.

well that explain the improper shutdown message & scandisk running every boot, but i can't find any info on those errors
the only way to get to DOS is to use a boot floppy disc (you can download one from bootdisk, WinME was the first M$ operating system that you couldn't easily access a true DOS, the A:> prompt you speak of is more like an emulation of DOS

    can you enter safe mode

BTW: what problems are you having ?

Edit: when & where exactly do receive those error messages

Cannot access safe mode. The error messages only came up when running restore disks. I was shutting down the computer with start-shut down option then waiting for it to shut down normmally but then this problem started by saying improper shut down detected and scan disk running but never completing, this is why I attempted the thorough scan disk which simply stopped responding, (in safe mode) resulting in restore attempts which threw up the error messages. I am borrowing a hard drive soon so will see what happens..
