My grandfather has started realising that computers are actually worth while and he wants me to find out how he can use his computer to convert VHS video to DVD format

Please help me out here because i am well and truely lost. Any methods/software/hardware suggestions would be greatly apreciated

I would suggest to buy the following things:

    - A tv card (to connect a VCR to the pc)
    - Nero 7 (with NeroVision).

You'll just need to connect the VCR to the tv card, and then record to a dvd or dvd files on-the-fly with NeroVision.

Another possible way is if you have access to a vhs/dvd recorder (the stand-alone type) - My grandfather does this in fact! Saved me having to show him how to re-author video on his pc :D

    - Capture the video to the computer as MPEG-2 using hardware capture devices that convert the VHS to MPEG-2 as they capture and then author and burn a DVD. A one-hour video is captured and compressed to MPEG-2 in one hour, but you are generally limited to doing "cuts-only" editing of the MPEG-2 files. However, if your original tape doesn't need editing this is a fast way to convert VHS to DVD, but still have the flexibility to create custom DVD menus. Many of the inexpensive hardware analog-to-MPEG boxes can deliver very good quality, in part because the analog source video does not have to be converted to DV before being encoded to MPEG. Converting VHS to DV can add artifacts that make it harder to get good MPEG compression.

thanks. i went and researched that furthur and the above method seems to be the method that he wants to go for. the problem with that wonderful description is that it dosnt say WHAT the "capture device" is called. can anyone suggest what this particular device is and models i should reccomend he gets.

also. with this method: will the software be overly complicated for an old bugger to master?

    thanks
