I have used two different 'brands' at once before although it is not recommended (crucial & kingston) as long as they are the same specification then you should be ok I'm thinking.

Brand does not come into it really. Of course you would want to try and get the best for your money, i.e. OCZ or the like...

If you are trying to achieve dual data transfer, you need to use pairs of exactly the same spec modules, i.e. 2 x 512MB @ 400Mhz and x.x latency.

If you just want to bump up your RAM you can use any combination as long as your motherboard can support it. i.e. 1 x 1GB PC3200 and 1 x 512MB PC2700. In this case the quicker memory will default to the slower speed of 333Mhz. You get the idea....
For example my set-up untill not long ago -
    Slot 1 - 512MB PC3200 generic rubbish
    Slot 2 - 256MB PC2700 Infinity
    Slot 4 - 256MB PC2700 Infinity
Everything worked fine but not at top speeds....

As for the CL rating - the lower the "better".
