I have a laptop that is at least a few years old (I bought it at and open box sale at Future Shop) and it has been fine until a few months ago. Every time I turned it on, it made a loud buzzing noise. I thought it was the fan, so I opened it up and cleaned it out, but the noise stayed. It worked fine for a couple of months but then I noticed it started to get slower and slower and realized that it was the hard drive making the noise. after it stopped booting at all, I put it away for about a month and I booted it up a couple of weeks ago, to my surprise, there was no noise and it booted and ran fine, however as time went on, the noise came back and got louder and louder until it stopped working again... Anyone know what to do? i read you could put it in a freezer?? Thank you.

    Welcome to hardwareforums Hickler

if it is the hard drive, you will have to replace it... putting HDD's in the freezer is a tempory hack to try and recover data off of it.

Okay, thanks. It seems like if I give it a rest it gets better... I just had it running for a few hours with no sign of a buzz, but alas, it started to come back :( Aw well, off to the computer store for me! Thanks again.

Edit: And thanks for the warm welcome!:)
