hello, i have bought a freecom2 external hard drive 80gb hdd and am having problems installing it on my pc, the problem is that it wont recignise it. i went to the device manager and found that the mass storage controller did not have a driver installed, it recomended that i installed this file DSBC310_WINXP2K98SE_DRIVER_110 since i do not have the disk with me i downloaded it off the internet, when i try to install the driver it says " the driver installtion file for this device is missing a necassary entry. this may be becasue the INF file was written for windows 95 or later, contact your hardware vendor " i am currently running windows xp service pack 2. any help would be great. many thanks
you shouldn't need a driver to use a usb storage device with windows xp... are you sure that the drive has been formatted with a file system? (most likely NTFS)
yes it has been tested on other computers and works fine, the pc im on used to run on 95 then got upgraded, i know that i shouldnt need a driver thats what is confusing me, just wandered if nyone else has a similar problem like this before. any ideas lol?
are you 100% sure the USB is working and does the HDD have a USB double adapter type device, as many USB HDD require to be connected to more than 1 USB port because each USB port on a root hub can only supply about 400mA, so, it is quite common to connect a HDD to more than 1 USB port on a root hub, another solution would be to add a powered USB hub as powered USB hubs can supply upto 6A, can you find anything to say how much power the HDD requires Edit: a USB root hub is the USB controller from which USB Ports on your computer are connected to & not connected to an external USB hub
