I put a modem in the computer of a friend of mine. He said that he now hears other people's conversations on teh phone line. he called the phone company and they said it was because of the computer or modem. How can that be? How can that be corrected?

He is using a regular dial up modem. If it is not in use, why would there be a problem. There is no phone attached to the modem. Is the phone company just passing the blame? I've never heard of this problem before.

    Thanks!

I would be quick to say that the phone company is just passing the blame, but since i've been working on computers for years I have seen stranger things happen. Your best bet, to make sure that its not the modem is to remove it for a short time and see if the issue persists. I can't say for sure how a modem would cause this problem but doing this should eliminate it if it is indeed not the cause.
