external hardrive problem

    hi

    i have 200 gb external hard drive it was working fine since lastnight the amber light was on on the hard drive and no noise i thought the fan has blown got the new fan installed and i can hear the fan spining but still no sign of hd booting up the light is green now when i connect the usb i can hear the connection beep from the computer but the sign of the hard drive in my computer i got very important things on the drive is there any one can help me please,

    i have no idea it dosent say any where on the hard drive,

    I've got to admit I'm not 100% sure of your problem so you may need to explain in a little more detail.

    I'm guessing you're using the external HDD purely for external storage and that you're not trying to boot from it. If your drive has disappeared form My Computer first be sure your connections are good and that the drives platters are spinning. If they are then try using the hardware detection wizard to see if the OS can locate / recognize the drive. This should be done automatically but you never know.
    Also check in Device Manager to see if the drive is recognized there.

    Try the HDD on another system too. If it works at least you know the drive is fine and you can rescue your data (although you should make backups!!!)

    i wentto the device manager and it says this device can not start because of code 10 error, i'm confused. is this external hard drive dead?
    no i cant hear the hard drives disk rolling.

    You could try mounting it in a different O/S or a different PC?
