I have a Toshiba Tecra M2 laptop in which I have upgraded the DVD Rw to a DVD Ram drive because I thought that the original drive had gone bad. The symptoms are that the drives, old one and new one both show up under my computer and hardware manager but will not function. I can right click on the drive and make it eject, but it does not see any disks placed in the drive. I can however, boot from the drive but as soon as window XP Pro launches I loose it. I found a third drive from one of my parts systems but have the same results. Any thoughts?

I would have said that you didnt connect the SATA or IDE cable (wich ever one)... but you said that it boots the Windows XP CD when you insert it... So that can't be the problem.

Is it IDE? and if it is... what are your jumper settings?

Thanks for your attempt at help. I found the solution by running the DVD fix VBS found out on the net and then changing the mode of the ide channel from ultra DMA to PIO. Drive started working again.
